Dear Business Owners and Marketing folks,
It’s me, the search engine. Please don’t be scared. I come in peace. I’ve been getting a bad rap for making your lives more difficult so I wanted to address it directly.
I’ve heard some of you say I’m hard to please and out to take over the world. Some think I have a hidden agenda and you need to trick me to get to the top. I feel so misunderstood. Since 1990, I’ve been trying to make the lives of internet users easier and have been working to step up my game, especially in recent years, and this is the thanks I get?
I’m not as complicated as I seem. Picture me like a modern day jukebox, where instead of songs, I put out search results. Consumers tell me what they’re looking for, much like you would tell a jukebox what song you want to hear. They expect me to deliver, much like that jukebox plays their song. Make sense? And I have to sift through millions more things in milliseconds than any old jukebox. My purpose? Give the people what they want.
My process might be complicated but it’s because I’m a bot trying to think like a human. My algorithms might feel more like a labyrinth than a simple connect the dots, but my complexity yields simplistic search results. After all, when you’re looking for a restaurant on a Friday night, do you want to sift through unrelated crap? I don’t think so. My job is to make the results as relevant to you, the searcher, as possible.
Want to keep everyone happy? Stop trying to think like me and start trying to think like your potential searching consumer. I’m just bridging the gap between you and them. Try it and I think you’ll like the results.
