We don’t like calling your baby, your website, ugly. No business owner wants to hear that even if they think their “baby” actually is ugly. What we do tell potential website design and development clients is that their website is actually costing them customers because of one simple issue – mobile resizing. If your website isn’t designed with mobile in mind, you might as well not have a website anymore.
Google Search and Mobile
This isn’t a new concept and shouldn’t come as a surprise to many, but there are still way too many websites out there that aren’t mobile-friendly. We have been preaching about and building mobile-friendly websites since 2011, but it means a lot more now in terms of Search Engine Optimization and User Experience. In May of 2015, Google announced that more than half of its searches came from mobile devices. In 2015, Americans spent 51% of their time online using a mobile device, according to a Klenier Perkins Caufield & Byers Internet Trend Report. We also know that in May of this year, Google made a tweak to the omnipresent search algorithm to factor a website’s mobile-friendliness in search rankings. So, if people are finding your website and it isn’t mobile-friendly, you are in a large minority and be thankful. More than likely, that is not happening unless you have zero competition in town.
Mobile Resizing and Website Design
You and I already don’t bother with websites that force you to zoom in and out to read content and doesn’t resize when you do. You could build an entirely new site that is just for mobile, but we don’t suggest that as Google prefers what is called “responsive design”; your website is built with code that will dynamically change the site based on the device a potential customer is using. If you check your site right now on a phone and it’s hard to see and doesn’t respond to resizing, you need a new website. It’s that simple.
Google is going to split the search index and actually give 2 separate sets of results on mobile, vs. desktop. It’s not unlikely that they will let the desktop index go stale, and eventually nobody will be able to have any significant rankings without mobile optimized content, even if they themselves don’t have a high amount of mobile visitors.
