In the auditory realm a feedback loop occurs when a sound travels from its point of output and then back as input, which then takes place over and over again. If you’ve ever been to a live performance you’ve probably heard the loud scream of feedback. It’s nothing more than the original sound cycling multiple times in a loop. So how would “feedback” present itself in the arena of social media?
When you apply the feedback parameters to this question the answer becomes more attainable. Today the majority of distribution and consumption of information and entertainment takes place online. Therefore the internet is ground zero for the masses to form their perceptions of reality. The amount of time spent in a digital wonderland is beginning to outweigh actual human interaction.
Distribution/Social Media & Internet = Output
Consumption/ Extrapolation = “Variable”
Regurgitation/ sharing of trending content = Input
Let’s break down each point in the “Incestuous Feedback Loop of Social Media.”
One must carefully consider the source of the content they ingest. Just because it exists doesn’t mean it’s true, likewise, just because it’s true does not mean it cannot be overcome. The majority of content distributed by the media is meant to feed the money machine. Those with larger amounts of capital have a larger mindshare. It’s age old propaganda. The difference today is the vehicle of delivery, the internet. It is effortless unleash an inferno of information upon the masses within a matter of minutes, creating fear or impulse.
This can be good and of course it can be bad, depending on the intent of the distributor/ gate keeper.
Unlike audio, where it is the same sounds that cycle through the feedback loop, social media is ingested and then opinions can be formed through the dissection of content. The power of thought, the power of collecting content from more than one source, and the free will to make up one’s own mind comes into play.
If the masses do not become educated the result is regurgitation. The same drivel repeated over and over again. This is the fragile point in the loop where things become incestuous. The masses end up feeding the same content back into the loop that fuels the power of the media machine and those with the most capital. The endless cycle of consumerism or now trending vomit, all while sitting on a phone or computer, disconnected with what’s really happening.
Content creators, create content that is original, inspiring and surprising or share content that was created with the same intent. Try to avoid incestuous regurgitation.
Navigate the information superhighway with care, limit your use and seek truth and positivity. Social media has the potential to take us in two different directions. At the “variable” point of ingestion is where the cycle can be fractured like a twig. Happy surfing!
